Halo is a franchise that was originally created by Bungie as a succession to their previous franchises, such as Marathon and Myth. It was originally designed as a real time strategy game shown off at a 1999 Mac World conference before Microsoft partnered with the company to make its upcoming console, the XBOX, succeed in marketing. The game evolved into a third person shooter for a while before finally reaching its first person shooter phase.

Bungie had developed Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach before splitting its relations with Microsoft Game Studios.

Since the split, 343 Industries, a section of Microsoft Game Studios, now maintains and creates the new titles for the franchise. 343 Industries has published Halo 4, Halo: Master Chief Collection, Halo: Spartan Strike, Halo: Spartan Assault, Halo 5: Guardians, Halo 5: Forge, Halo Recruit (VR) Halo Wars 2, and is working on its upcoming Halo: Infinite.

Halo Wars was the only game developed by Enesmble Studios.

Games such as Project Haggar and Halo: Online are titles that were in development but were cancelled titles.
